What are Porcelain Veneers?
Veneers are small, tooth-shaped structures that are custom designed to cover the front of a damaged tooth.
Veneers can be constructed out of either composite resin material or porcelain. Our office provides expertise in porcelain veneers for a naturally enhanced look. Porcelain veneers are stain resistant and the color can be chosen to make dark teeth appear whiter.
Because they are bonded to the front of your natural tooth, veneers offer patients a less invasive alternative to tooth extraction and dental implants.
What is the Process of Receiving Porcelain Veneers?
Once you have determined that porcelain veneers is the best option for you, there are several steps involved in the process. Compared to the process of dental implants, veneers are much less time consuming and can be completed within several weeks.
Initial Stage: During the first stage of receiving your porcelain veneers, you will meet with Dr. Max Breazeal who will examine your oral structures to ensure that porcelain veneers will work for you. Not all patients are ideal candidates for porcelain veneers. If you experience any of the following problems, veneers may not be right for you.
- Weak teeth (due to decay or cracking)
- Insufficient amount of tooth enamel
- Grinding or clenching teeth
However, if you are a good candidate for veneers, Dr. Breazeal will then make an initial impression of your mouth and teeth. At this time, you will be able to explain the specific results you are looking for and specify the shape, color and size of your veneers.
Preparation: In order to prepare your teeth for the bonding process, a small amount of enamel must be removed from your natural teeth. The amount of enamel that is removed is miniscule and the process is pain-free. However, anesthesia may be used if you are uncomfortable or nervous about the procedure.
After the enamel is removed, a cast or mold of your oral structures will be made. This cast will be sent to our laboratory and used to craft your porcelain veneers. Veneers typically take one to two weeks to be crafted and sent back to our office.
Bonding: Bonding is the final stage of receiving your porcelain veneers. Once we receive your veneers from the laboratory, you can examine them to make sure the fit and size is perfect. Then Dr. Breazeal will bond the individual veneers to your natural teeth using special dental cement. After removing any excess cement, he will use a special light to permanently seal your veneers in place.
