Do you have clear aligners or are you thinking about getting a pair? If so, then you might want to take note of the do’s and don’ts when you are wearing clear braces such as Invisalign.
DON’T drink with your clear braces on.
According to the makers of Invisalign, consuming any type of beverage while you have your clear braces on can actually damage your aligners more than you think. When you consume hot beverages while you have your clear braces on, it’s actually possible for you to warp your braces. The reason has to do with the make-up of your braces. Since they are made with plastic, the heat can affect the shape of your aligner and change the fit they have on your teeth. On the other hand, when you consume pigmented drinks such as wine while you have your aligners on, these beverages can actually stain your clear braces.
At the same time, when you consume beverages with your aligners still on, your teeth could actually be affected also. Tooth decay can be accelerated when you consume drinks with your braces on. This is because minute amounts of the beverage you consume may seep into your aligner and have prolonged contact with the enamel of your teeth which can increase your risk for cavities. While it may seem like you have a long list of beverages which you cannot consume, you actually can still drink whatever you want granted that you remove your aligners first.
DO drink cool water with your aligners on.
There is one exception with the beverage rule, however, and that is cool water. Drinking this beverage does not put you at risk for warping and it does not contribute to the development of tooth decay which makes cool water better. This drink also helps to cleanse your clear braces.
DO clean your clear aligners.
Your clear braces will accumulate plaque and other dental debris over time. For this reason, it’s crucial that you clean your aligners everyday with the help of a specially formulated cleaning product such as prepackaged cleaning crystals or the specially made Invisalign Cleaning System. The only drawback with these products is that they can be rather pricey. But given that using other products could cause substantial damage to your aligners, it might be a sounder investment on your part to use only the approved cleaning products for clear orthodontic braces.
